Day was the day of the final simulation. Before talking about this I would like to comment on the lawyers. Who do you trust to really be there for the kids when it comes to creating a contract, that when you hear from both sides, that is great for the kids. Should I trust a lawyer that has never been in the educational setting or a union representative that has been there in the classroom and in the school office? When inviting both of these groups into the negotiation process you are giving up some control to help the kids and the school district. I guess that is what we have come to in today's world. Do not trust the other side and do not assume that they are actually trying to do what is right for the kids.
The final simulation ended on a positive note. We both came to an agreement in the end with all the language and also on the salary end. What I am still struggling with is how to finish the salary statement. The board group did a nice job of finalizing the salary statement and changing the cells. I do know that this is an area that I need to work on before becoming a superintendent. As the superintendent the board and teachers will be counting on me to make sure that everything is set and correct. I enjoyed this simulation and even though it may not be totally accurate of what it is really like around the table it was good to go through the process.
