Week 2 Day 1

I loved the "war stories" as Mr. Meehan called them. It was very interesting to hear his different stories and also his background. I assumed that the mediators were all college trained with doctor of socialogy degrees. I was very surprised when he said some of the negotiators only had high school degrees. A lot of his tips were aligned with the books that we have been reading. It was nice to know that theroy works well in practice as well. I was most interested in the data that he shared that displayed a decrease in the number of strikes after they became legal. I teach in Iowa, s no strike state, so I am unfamiliar with the stike rules and policy. The lockout and dock in pay were new information for me. I also had not considered insurance as a factor in a strike. This could be a major factor with the high cost of insurance. I think union members would think twice before they strike if they know that they may lose insurance.I liked the similiation exercises also. It was interesting to put on the man's hat to think of their interests.
