Collective Bargaining from a mediator’s perspective: Jerry Meehan
I am glad to know there are experts out there to help when times get tough with negotiation. Their daily interactions with negotiations make collective bargaining second nature. They are comfortable with confrontations and can easily guide groups to become reflective in their bargaining requests. The examples of real life scenarios helps solidify concepts presented. Interest Based Bargaining seems the right way to go if everyone plays by the rules. It would appear to save time and money as people reach agreements quicker and then are happier.

It is interesting to note how important timing is when negotiations begin and end. Everything should be considered such as the time of year, when insurance is paid, football season or homecoming. This is a reminder to step back and look at the big picture and determine consequences of a long negotiation or strike.

His large post-it-notes remind me of a long negotiation process in our district where the superintendent was in the middle helping to resolve the issue. Teachers’ jobs were on the line and between the possible solutions a brilliant plan emerged and everyone agreed and no jobs were lost. Brainstorming sessions help both sides look at issues in a different light and settle on the best solution for all involved.

I am amazed Jerry’s organization is free. This is an area where money could be saved in collective bargaining. The word needs to get out about their services!
