The first weekend was a real eye opener where the complexities of the bargaining process were made apparent. I tried to visualize the process in our district during the ground rules and possible scenarios activities. I can see how individual personalities might "dance" differently at different times in the process--a tango (passionate bargaining), a waltz (smooth sailing) or cossack dance (aggressive and angry) complete with swords swishing back and forth in response to demands presented by each side. The ground rules exercise and readings helped me see how meeting one sets the tone for future meetings. The class exercises, personal experiences of others in the class and readings will be useful in preparing me for the bargaining process. The critical leadership role of a superintendent or central office administrator was reinforced. The superintendent sets the tone, needs to be well informed about district issues and building climates in order to move the district toward common goals.
